Soapstone Cookware

Wildwood stoneware is individually hand carved from solid stone nuggets by artisans. Our pots and pans are substantial cookware with unique virtues in the kitchen. Soapstone is beautiful to cook with. Great for cooking slowly in moist heat, perfect for making stews and pulled pork, or Persian rice. Chemically inert our stone pots do not change the flavor of food, and cook with remarkable evenness; there are no hot spots in a soapstone pot. Soapstone retains heat, when you fry in stoneware meats brown up better than in any other sort of metal than cast iron, because the food scarcely lowers the temperature of the utensil at all. In oven cooking the stoneware protects food from fluctuation that is always going on when the gas or electric elements cycles on and off.

When you bring the stone pot to the table foods stay hot. Soapstone will handle heat well in excess of 1000 F. The medieval Vikings cooked with soapstone as did the Gabrielinos Indians who dominated the Los Angels Basin. In Italy they have been making stoneware since at least the 1400's Medieval Arab cook books claimed soapstone was superior to metal because it did not change the flavor of food. The tradition has survived mainly in Brazil, Yemen, and Lombardy.

Wildwood Soapstone cookware must be cured prior to use, download instructions.
